iPhone, iPod Touch and WordPress

2008 July 15

Earlier in the year I wrote about adding the mobileadmin plugin on the backend of this blog so I could post from my an iPod touch and honestly I do post a lot from it while listening to Bruce Springsteen, Warren Zevon and other tunes. Granted the interface is small and I’ve got large digits. I do like the idea that I don’t have to fire up the laptop to post something.

When the new iPhones came out last week Apple released an update for the OS behind the iPod touch and last years iPhones that would allow folks to add all the next flood of Apps for the iPhone/iPod platform. I was going to wait a few days in case there was bug in the mix. Today I couldn’t put it off any longer and went for the update. Coming in at just a little less than $10 it didn’t seem like a bad investment to extend the life of the iPod.

While it was downloading I found there are a lot of free Apps that make the cost of the upgrade worth the cost the cost entering the gate. The one I had really wanted to see released was the WordPress App for iPhone. It’s not out yet, so I tried the ShoZu plugin. The ShoZu is really not ready for primetime, you’d be better using the mobileadmin to post to WordPress. TypePad users have an App already out the gate to use in iPhone. I noticed that WordPress has release an update (v. 2.6) tonight so it might be laying the planks to floor up the release of the iPhone App soon.

One App that I found that gives a nod to the Citizen Journalist trend from network television was that FOX News has a uReport App for the iPhone. There will be a lot vehicles released from all new outlets to help drive in ‘first person reporting’ into there pits before it’s over with. With the camera, internet connectivity and eager iPhoneaphiles ready to get their perspective on the news out their it may become a perfect storm to change the landscape of news reporting. It was that long ago that news agencies discounted bloggers as disgruntled opinions.

The sleeper App is the Remote. After you install this puppy, after you enter the Passcode on you computer or iTV you can control your computer’s (or iTV’s) playlist, volume and other things with just a touch and maybe a few turned heads.

There are plenty of games for the Xbox/PacMan set. I haven’t added any yet. Give me an hour or two.

All in all the upgrade is worth it. It’s a little over a couple gallons of gas and it would probably save you that much in gas from driving around to find something to keep you amused. Right now, I’ve got a WordPress update to install.

For anyone wanting a peak at the WordPress App that’s coming for the iPhone/iPod here’s a video from WordPress.
