Political Tinnitus

After hearing all the big speechs in primetime for the last two weeks I was expecting something a stronger message from McCain tonight. I have a great reguard for the man. I had an uncle that was injuried and capture in the Vietnam War and know the struggles he had to live with after finally coming home. I had purchased McCains book Faith of My Fathers a while back and thought he might address the country in the voice that the book spoke with.

His running mate, Sarah Palin, read her speech with conviction. You would expect that from a former reporter anyway. I believe that is what bothered me about McCain’s speech, his running mate.

On the front end I had no bias about her. When I read about her teenage daughter’s situation, her lobbying of Congress to get some of the pork barrel projects Senator Ted Stevens was famous for, the thinnly insulated actions to fire her ex brother-in-law, the Wasillia Multi-Use Sports Complex that has operating in the red, her use of eninent domain for the land the same complex sits on, her asking Wasillia city employees resign because they spoke to members of the press without her approval and her belief that the war in Iraq is “a Task from God” (video).  I had read that she lowered property taxes, but increased sale taxes, increasing the cost of living for Wasillia residents and allowing business and corparations to see savings. It’s just my current opinion that McCain picked her to sway Hilliary Clinton backers and evangelical voters that is just plain old pandering.

There’s about two months left on the election and I feel we will be seeing hundreds of ads running that will remind Tennesseans of the Bob Corker/Harold Ford, Jr. senate race. Given all the landmines both sides are bringing into this battle there is going to be a lot noise and everyone will be suffering from political tinnitus in the end.
