False Report Starts an SEC Investigation
A false report that Steve Jobs suffered a heart attack has started an SEC investigation. The report was published at a CNN citizen journalist website. Apple finally denied the report only after the the company’s stock dropped. PC World as a look at citizen journalist as their content is used by CNN and other media websites.
The citizen journalist generated stories have been big boost to a lot traditional news websites, but there are times that abuse, sloppy fact checking and a poor review of content keeps the citizen journalist from being taken as a serious source real news. The majority of the stories are raw and first person tales that can help a network news, newspaper and magazines discover stories at a faster pace than ever before.
If news organizations would set guidelines for these citizen journalist to review and acknowledge before they ever allowed to publish the first line it would go a long ways towards adding creditability to this new stable news gathers. Also assigning an editor or reporter oversee what’s being published online would be a best firewall to prevent rouge reports.
Apple may want to think adding a defibrillator to the next generation of iPhone to help investors feel a safer about Jobs’ health.
