Has Google Lost a Customer or Gained a Competitor?

2008 October 13

Cars run over gas and web sites have to run ad revenue. Most smaller publishers, like this site, depend on revenue from click through on Google’s Adsense ads or commissions on a sale from other banner ads. The revenue share for the most part isn’t that great and it would be better to control you own advertising sales. Selling ads takes away time from creating content if you’re a small site.

For a long time Myspace has been running on Adsense fuel. Now it looks like they are wanting to declare their independence from Google energy as they move into the beta phase of launching their own ad network. It seems to be the next logical step after social network was acquired by News Corp. and another News Corp. company SDC has developed the ad sales and delivery software for Myspace’s myAds. Moving the sales inhouse will add a larger part of the of advertising sales into the News Corp/Mypace bank. There is no word yet if the myAds will be turned out to smaller web sites like Google did with Adsense. Now Google doesn’t just lose a major customer, it faces the possibility that they may have a new competitor in the future.
