Eco – An Inconvenient Domain

2009 March 27

It’s the silly season for the Internet domain industry. This story just goes to prove it.

Normally there are dozens of top level domain names (TLD) thrown around as possible additions to the suffixes already on the Internet. One company, DOT ECO LLC, has proposed adding .ECO into the alphabet soup recipe of the Internet. That decision will be made by chefs of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) and they have cooked up some pretty rotten concoctions at times.

The ECO proposal probably would not have got much ink, even on a slow news day, but the cause picked up a high profile endorsement. Former Vice President and Nobel prize winner Al Gore has thrown his weight behind the new domain citing it to be an “exciting opportunity for the environmental movement”. The ECO DOT website also mentioned the endorsement the third James Bond, Roger Moore.

I don’t think this will be a domain I would investing too much on. The price will likely end up much higher than other domain names to support “Green” and Earth friendly causes. Plus with all the extensions in the Internet, people will still type in a .COM for the domain name.
