If Nikon Would Only…

nikon-85mm-f3.5G-AF-S-DX-ED-microWhen Nikon announced the 85mm f/3.5G AF-S DX ED VR Micro Nikkor lens along with the Nikon D3s it was apparent that Nikon was going to carry the nine-blade diaphragm over to every lens they release from now on. I don’t have a problem with the newer blade arrangement, it delivers a fantastic bokeh effect to make the out focus areas look natural and lifelike.

I wish that Nikon would revisit and revive some of their older retired lenses with the nine-blade aperture and VR enhancements. One of my all time favorites is the Nikkor 105mm f/2.5, not the Micro version. That lens was perfect for head shots, product, photojournalism, courtroom photography and much more. The lens was the right mix of length and speed to deliver an image that there was no doubt what the subject was, but allow enough perspective to know where they were. If there ever was a lens that needed to be brought back to life it was the 105.

Maybe one day Nikon will go retro like Ford and Chevrolet did with the Mustang and Camero.

Nikon and Free?

That is two words you never hear together, but Nikon has release a free iPhone app called Nikon’s Learn & Explore. It is a pretty nice with photo galleries, videos, a glossery or photography terms and a portibale verson of Nikon World magazine. It is not as good as catching a Nikon School when it’s in your area, but the app can coach you to better photographs until one gets to town. And again it is a free app that will updated with new content as time moves on. It will also run on the the iPod Touch, so no one is left out in the cold with the program.
