Captain America Needs My Input

2010 February 3

1990 Captain America movie posterWe have the seen and enjoyed the Spider Man, the X-Men, Blade, Iron Man and Wolverine movies over the last decade, but Marvel didn’t start out making movies that True Believers were happy with.

There was Howard the Duck, a George Lucas vehicle that was OK. It wasn’t like the Star Wars or Indiana Jones movies Lucas was responsible for.

Then there was Captain America. It did not get the attention to casting, direction of scripting that the Captain deserved. Instead he got the Power Rangers treatment. The film was produced for a pre-teen, not a hard core Marvel fan. You can watch the 1990 version to judge for yourself (below or on Hulu).

Production has started for The First Avenger: Captain America with a release date of July 22, 2011. This is one film that I really think has to be executed perfectly. The hero from the Golden Age of comics has lasted too many years not to have every detail of the film match the expectations of his fans.

I’m not the guy to say I’d like to direct or oversea the movie, but this is one movie I would like to have some input on. I have follow the title since the early 1970′s and feel that Captain America is an icon for what stands America for.  The Captain is not a perfect character, but he always followed his instincts on what was best for the nation. When the country is at war on two fronts against an enemy who has no country the image the Captain projects on-screen will go a long way towards bringing allies on-board for the war against terror.

First order of business would be to cast Kiefer Sutherland as Steve Rogers/Captain American.
